Pinot Noir
Syraz>Cabernet Sauvignon>Merlot>Pinot noir
Merlot or Pinot Noir
Most common red wines are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syraz=Shiraz, and Pinot Noir which became popular in recent years.
Most red wine (except in Europe) are named after the type of grapes that was being used.
In Europe, there are wines that are named after the grapes. But in France and Italy mainly the wines are named after the region and the winery.
Also, the wines are officially categorized too by the government too.
Each grapes have their suitable climate to grow in. However, due to the difference in each region and vineyard, so the taste of wine will be different.
(Add on to that, the climate of each year will be different too so the taste from year to year will also be different)
Often the winery will also mix the grapes to produce signature wines (that is why you see xx% and xx% on the label)
Red wines can be characterized by their body, crispness, aroma, and often the order of each is:
Syraz>Cabernet Sauvignon>Merlot>Pinot Noir
Usually, full body wines are more crisp but may also be less smooth, so it is often call dry wine
low to medium body usually has a sweeter taste, so if you don't like a heavy "alcohol taste", this type may be a better choice
Merlot or Pinot noir are late harvest grapes so generally they may carry more aroma or have a greater blend of taste
Generally these two types are more "sweeter" in taste.
Above is just a generalization
Wine from each winery will taste different even they are the same grapes
Generally, I look at cost and taste
My price range:
Low range - usually less than $10 after tax. The wine is usually around 6 or 7 dollars.
These are ones that if I don't finish, I don't feel guilty type.
Medium range - usually less than $15 after tax. the wine is usually around 12 or 13 dollars.
There are ones that I usually drink and if I don't finish it, I will want to finish them.
High range - usually more than $20 after tax. I don't really know why are they so pricy. I don't usually drink in this category but good for gifts.
In the low range, I first recommend the Cabernet Sauvignon from woodbridge and Beringer. They both are medium body.
The Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from Barefoot are also nice. Ranging from medium to light body.
In this range, I also recommend the Cabernet Sauvignon from Casillero del Diablo. It have medium body and nice aroma.
Yellow Tail Syrah
The other bottle I recommend in this range is Syrah from Yellow Tail. It has medium (to high) wine body. Quite crisp to the taste.
So these are the rec today. Will have some more when I drink more ^_^
